This isn't a baking blog or a ministry blog (but I'll talk about those), and it's not a gardening blog (goodness, no). This is just a blog about anything, and maybe everything, that I'm thinking about right now.

Phat Hatties

Have you ever noticed that people who care about barbecue really REALLY care about barbecue?  People are very loyal to the barbecue that they love and that barbecue is rarely something that can be found in Colorado Springs.  (Until Rudy's on Hwy 24 entered the Colorado picture.  That made a lot of people happy.)

Steve and I didn't grow up in Texas, or in the Carolinas, and we don't have very definite loyalties to any particular barbecue.  But we know what we like.

We like Front Range Barbecue.  It's pretty good.  Occasionally we feel like eating there.

We like Bird Dog BBQ.  On top of their pretty tasty food (we like the baked potatoes topped with BBQ pork or brisket) the atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable.

And, probably like you, we've often passed by the little BBQ food truck in the parking lot of Big Lots, at Union and Academy, and wondered if they are any good.  Today, in an effort to not heat up the house, we finally gave it a try!

It's called Phat Hatties Smokehouse Barbeque.  (Have you ever noticed how many ways there are to spell "barbecue"?)  They are open from 11-6, Monday-Saturday, weather permitting.

They won Best Brisket two years in a row (2009 and 2010; here's rootin' for 2011!) in the Old Town Showdown in Old Colorado City.  (Keep an eye out for this event in late July.)

They have one table to sit at there in the parking lot.  The customers were friendly, and I bet it would be acceptable to squeeze onto the table along with whomever else is sitting there.

Service was very friendly, and they didn't mind my slow perusal of their menu or my many questions.

We ordered a pulled pork sandwich (which came with cole slaw), and a half pound of brisket and a bag of chips to go (for Steve and I).  Our total came to $13.  We both really liked our food!  Their meat was tender, and not too lean nor too fatty.  Their sauce had a little bite of spiciness, but not too much.  As far as I can tell, they only offer one sauce.  Their cole slaw wasn't as good as my own,  but it honestly seemed a lot healthier (less creamy).  Once I put it on my sandwich, as I always do, it was perfect!

Phat Hatties might have usurped Front Range and Bird Dog for our family.

Give it a try and see what you think!

Since their truck is small, they recommend calling ahead for orders over 2 lbs. of meat.  Check out their website here.
